Solar cells mounted on panels absorb sunlight and turn it into energy.
It is a bit like photosynthesis in plants. Photovoltaic panels (PVP) as they are called, used to be really expensive but have dropped almost 50% in price over the last 4 years.
They are now much cheaper and will further fall in price allowing all but the poorest folk to access them. This paper explains how they work.
